A location-based SAP data management service was launched at the CeBIT technology conference this week. Garmin, SAP, and WebTech have partnered to produce the service, which is aimed at
increasing the enterprise viability of electric vehicles.
The companies said that the application will allow electric car drivers to transmit and receive specific, localized information on nearby charging stations and monitor the efficiency, costs, and carbon savings incurred by their vehicle. The SAP data management portion of the system will collect the data, storing it for later study and analysis.
WebTech senior director of insurance and OEM business units Edward Kulperger said that "we know the move to electrics will require a tremendous shift in driving habits, though not so different from when drivers of diesel vehicles planned their route dependant on the location of refueling stops. Now our technology promises to greatly facilitate this transition and improve the chances of success for electric vehicles and the greater goal of reducing our use of fossil fuels."
Other WebTech executives expressed excitement at having worked with SAP and Garmin, describing them as "the ideal technical team" for the project.
