A white paper released last month by analysis firm IDC said that flexibility,
interoperability, and seamless integration were the most asked-for features from enterprise software users in a 2009 IDC poll.
Enterprise application buyers cited systems like SAP data management as areas in which they looked for cost flexibility and management, the white paper said, adding that "in today’s volatile business world, IT departments are more pressed than ever to support rapid change."
Customized add-ons could be a popular option for IT decision makers in 2010, as many of them told IDC that creating and maintaining their own custom code for applications was a sizeable drain on their time. "Over 30 percent of IT’s time is spent on maintaining or enhancing existing application code and integrating legacy applications within the IT environment," the white paper said.
Outside experts like CIO Magazine’s Phil Ayres added their own opinions on the white paper. Ayres wrote in CIO that "the survey shows that people recognize business processes are not trapped within a single application."
