Business software maker SAP announced
Monday that it had provided German car manufacturer Porsche with fresh new ways to help the construction of its new Panamera and Cayenne vehicles proceed more efficiently.
SAP said that "Porsche has developed a new logistic concept at its plant in Leipzig, Germany, one of the world’s most modern factories. Via exactly planned procedures incorporating all suppliers, parts are delivered just one hour before they are further processed on the production line, virtually eliminating the need for expensive storage areas."
The SAP data management software, according to the company, will provide a centralized information tracking and business intelligence framework for the entirety of the Porsche factory’s supply chain, including warehouse management and the ordering of parts.
SAP’s software will be part of a lean initiative at Porsche, in which anything that doesn’t make for a better value for the consumer and the investor is targeted for elimination. Lean processes originated at another car manufacturer, Toyota, and are even referred to in some quarters as "Toyotism."
