Updated versions of IBM’s System x and BladeCenter servers will be released later this year, IBM announced at the CeBIT trade show. The company gave a sneak peek at the new devices as
well.
ZDNet reported that the main advantage the new servers would have over previous designs would be their increased flexibility. Memory expansion for traditional servers requires the purchase of new servers past a certain level of expansion, due to insufficient DIMM spaces.
The new devices, however, offer expanded memory capabilities, so that users can add much more memory to their servers without needing to purchase new hardware. This development is potentially useful for any IT department running SAP data management software or other business information products.
PC World said that "in the new architecture, the memory is stored in a slim, 1U ‘drawer,’ that packs 600 percent more memory than available today on standard servers, [the company] said. IBM has developed a separate X-Architecture chip to reduce latency between memory and processor. By separating the memory and processor, systems will have access to a larger memory pool with better scalability which could help boost application performance, IBM said."
