The results of a survey of IT decision makers conducted by the Enterprise Desktop Alliances found that, while
majorities of both Mac- and PC-using IT departments said that PCs were more expensive to maintain, Macs posed their own challenges.
Overall, the study said that 45 percent of those surveyed cited either lower tech support costs or lower total costs of ownership as a significant factor in their Mac purchases. The only groups that said PC maintenance was less costly, the study’s authors speculate, were those that worked with PCs either most or all of the time.
CIO Magazine pointed out that the study did not factor in the initial costs in its conclusions, and said that Macs are generally more expensive than PCs, sometimes by a factor of two or more. Security, file sharing, and general enterprise support for features like SAP data management were also generally considered to be lacking on Macs, according to CIO. Interoperability between the two platforms is also generally held to be problematic.
